COT Data Methodology & Analysis Guide

Transparent methodology for analyzing Commitment of Traders reports with statistical rigor

What is COT Data?

The Commitment of Traders (COT) report is a weekly publication by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) showing how different trader categories are positioned in futures markets.

Published

Every Friday, 3:30 PM ET

Data Date

Tuesday (same week)

Historical Window

104 weeks (2 years)

Trader Categories

Non-Commercial Traders (Large Speculators)

This is our primary focus. Large speculative traders including hedge funds, asset managers, and proprietary trading firms. These traders drive market trends and sentiment.

All percentiles, Z-scores, and extremes in our analysis refer to Non-Commercial net positions.

Commercial Traders (Hedgers)

Businesses using futures to hedge business risk: airlines hedging fuel costs, farmers hedging crop prices, banks hedging currency exposure.

Non-Reportable Positions (Small Traders)

Small individual traders and retail accounts below CFTC reporting thresholds.

Key Metrics We Calculate

1. Net Position

Formula: Long Contracts - Short Contracts
Positive (Net Long):More long contracts = bullish positioning
Negative (Net Short):More short contracts = bearish positioning

2. Percentile Rank

Method: Empirical ranking over 104 weeks

1st - 5th Percentile

Near historic lows

50th Percentile

Median / Mid-range

95th - 99th Percentile

Near historic highs

Important: Percentiles are relative to the past 104 weeks, not all-time history.

3. Z-Score (Standard Score)

Formula: (Current Position - Mean) / Standard Deviation
Z > +2.0:Statistically unusual high (2+ std dev above mean)
Z = -1.0 to +1.0:Within normal range (~68% of observations)
Z < -2.0:Statistically unusual low (2+ std dev below mean)

4. Moving Averages

Mean of the prior N weeks, excluding the current week

Statistical Limitations & Caveats

Frequently Asked Questions

Why focus on Non-Commercial traders?

Large speculators (Non-Commercial) tend to be trend-followers and momentum traders. Their positioning often reflects market sentiment and can indicate crowded trades or extreme positioning.

Do extreme percentiles predict reversals?

No. Extreme positioning can persist for extended periods. Historical extremes tell you where we are, not where we're going.

Can I use this data for trading?
